Why do you need Haifisha?
Thank you for entering the Haifisha website. Read the introduction page to better understand the concept and content behind Haifisha.
I created “Haifisha” as a web page for English speakers, who want to have regular updates about social events around Haifa and the surrounding area that are relevant for English speakers. No need for you to spend precious time figuring out what is what and who is who in Haifa to have a social life as an English speaker. Haifisha readers will get all the updates and information in one place.
Back in 2016, when I just moved to Haifa, I had almost no social life due to limited or almost no Hebrew, and I felt very isolated and lonely during my first days in the area. I joined community groups for local English speakers on social media. I found them heavily loaded with general marketing information, like adverts of apartments for rent, second-hand houseware, and other buy-sell notices.
I invested my free time, searched for information, networked, started following interesting social media groups and organizations. I filtered out a lot of trash, and I found great seminars, conferences, volunteer opportunities, activities, classes, tours, cafes, libraries, shared work spaces, dance clubs etc.
I started to collect and share these announcements on my Facebook page, that I named “Haifisha”, that comes from a fusion of three words – Haifa (the city in which I live) + афиша (afisha ‘billboard’ in Russian) + אישה (isha ‘woman’ in Hebrew). The page gradually grew with organic followers and organizations that regularly share their events.
I call events and places “English speakers friendly” to show that they would not always be entirely in English, but organizers or participants would be using English so that limited Hebrew speaking skills would not make a newcomer feel like an outsider.
Whether you are a new immigrant, ola hadasha, expat, tourist on a short visit or business traveler, Haifisha is here to make your stay full of meaningful social connections, exciting encounters with locals and great learning experiences even if your Hebrew is limited.
If you want to publish your events and places here, please, feel free to contact me by e-mail: email@example.com or on the Facebook page.
All the best,
